Dezember 1926 in Wien, war ein bedeutender amerikanischer Philosoph und Psychotherapeut, der als Begr\u00fcnder der Focusing-Methode bekannt wurde.<\/p>\n<p>Gendlin wurde als einziges Kind von Sylvia Tobell und Leonid Gendelin geboren. Die j\u00fcdische Familie musste 1938 vor den Nazis aus Wien fliehen. Nach einer abenteuerlichen Reise \u00fcber Holland lie\u00dfen sie sich im Januar 1939 in den USA, genauer gesagt in Chicago, nieder. Dort \u00e4nderte Eugen seinen Namen in Gene, und die Familie nannte sich fortan Gendlin.<\/p>\n<p>Nach dem Abschluss seiner Schulbildung diente Gendlin im letzten Kriegsjahr in der US-Navy. Im Jahr 1948 begann er sein Studium der Philosophie an der Universit\u00e4t von Chicago. Dort schrieb er seine Abschlussarbeit \u00fcber das Werk von Wilhelm Dilthey. Schon w\u00e4hrend seines Studiums ver\u00f6ffentlichte er mehrere Arbeiten und promovierte 1958 mit einer Dissertation \u00fcber <em>die Funktion des Erlebens in der Symbolisierung.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mit 25 Jahren begann Gendlin, seine eigenen philosophischen Ideen in der Praxis zu erproben. Er fand diese Gelegenheit im Counseling Center der Universit\u00e4t, das von Carl Rogers geleitet wurde. Rogers erkannte schnell Gendlins theoretisches Talent und \u00fcbertrug ihm Forschungsarbeiten. In den 1960er Jahren entwickelte Gendlin die Focusing-Methode, eine therapeutische Technik, die das innere Erleben und die emotionalen Empfindungen des K\u00f6rpers in den Mittelpunkt stellt.<\/p>\n<p>Gendlin \u00fcbernahm verschiedene akademische Positionen, darunter eine Professur an der Universit\u00e4t von Chicago. Er gr\u00fcndete die Zeitschrift <em>Psychotherapy: Theory, Research and Practice<\/em> und ver\u00f6ffentlichte zahlreiche Artikel und B\u00fccher zu Philosophie und Psychotherapie. In den 1980er Jahren lehrte er als Gastprofessor an Universit\u00e4ten in Belgien, Japan und New York.<\/p>\n<p>Gendlin interessierte sich besonders daf\u00fcr, wie philosophisches Denken in eine allt\u00e4gliche Praxis umgesetzt werden k\u00f6nnte. Zu diesem Zweck entwickelte er die Methode des <em>Thinking at the Edge<\/em>, die es erm\u00f6glicht, frisch und eigenst\u00e4ndig zu denken und neue Konzepte zu entwickeln.<\/p>\n<p>In den letzten Jahren seines Lebens widmete sich Gendlin verst\u00e4rkt der Verbreitung seiner Arbeit. Zusammen mit seiner Frau Marion Hendricks koordinierte er weltweite Focusing-Aktivit\u00e4ten. Gene Gendlin verstarb am 1. Mai 2017 in New York im Alter von 90 Jahren.
